Running a company is not a 9 to 5 job. Entrepreneur's schedule is not very defined and they consequently tend to work 7 days a week. Everyone is different hence in today's environment where entrepreneurship is often idealised, there is still a bit of mystery surrounding what the modern business founder or CEO does on a daily basis.
Moreso, running a company or rather business isn't always glamorous. It is not as fancy as the entrepreneur's diamond watch or private jet, it is infact often downright droning. But then a well plan routine leads to efficiency and creates a sense of sanctuary often with lots of crazy mad days, pedalling and fire drills. Thus, that's what a day looks like for an entrepreneur.
Similarly, business owners end up wearing a lot of hats. A day in the life of an entrepreneur can involve client calls and meetings, sales calls and orders, marketing, and tons of other things that advance the progress of the business. It is not about big, forward thinking strategic moves, There are many smaller tasks that need to be addressed to keep the business going.
Having said that, a typical day for all entrepreneur cannot possibly be the same. But here are the common obvious routine:
IN THE MORNING HOURS:
They wake up at somewhere between 6 - 7 am depending on what time they went to bed the night before. Before even getting out in the morning, the first thing entrepreneurs do is is to grab the phone to see all the text messages, emails that requires responding, missed calls. They usually respond to everything while lying in bed. Roll on the bed to get your laptop and switch on to start the day.
At 8:am, if they have got children, they drop them first at school then ht the gym assuming there is enough time. After the work out they return for some breakfast while listening to the news or reading them on the papers picked up while out.
At 9:am Start getting ready, getting dressed for the day spend around 30 to 40 minutes while listening to some cool music or watching TV.
10:am It is time to communicate with the world. For almost two hours in the morning, try to talk to potential clients and other colleague entrepreneurs to how to grow your companies or even collaborate etc.
IN THE AFTERNOON
12:00 pm - If they are working at home, they are probably still in their pyjamas, working on a tasks or proposals. Also sometimes out for a lunch out with perspective clients perhaps a few days of the week. However, many business doesn't result in more revenue, but still have a big impact on the business in its entity. From my experience as an entrepreneur, i can rightly say often we don't get time time to have lunch, hence we have to be disciplined and not get burned out too with too much to do.
2:00 pm - If they have a team of staff, it is mostly time for all team meeting to find out how everyone else is doing. If they work alone, they are probably outsourced some of the work and is getting in touch with them to find how it is getting on and how they can contribute towards the speedy completion to meet up with clients dead line or even their deadline depending on the tasks outsource. Most at-times it may well be the entrepreneur's work that was outsourced to another company to get up on top things.
3 - 4:00 pm - If you have your children to collect from school or arrange for someone to collect them assuming you have got so much to do. Spend the remaining time on phone calls or tasks.
IN THE EVENING
5:00 - 7:00 pm - This is the time truly for for highlight of the day. Reflect on what you have done and what needs to be done. Review any outstanding tasks and checking random emails, reviewing goals and and closing potential deals.
7:00 pm - If you worked from home, you get back home and attend to your children, have dinner, showers, homework etc, otherwise if you worked at home retire your duties for a couple of hours to duly attend to your family until in bed.
9:00 pm - You can have me time, whether its relaxing and watching an interesting programme. Engage in writing an article, blogs. Work on any strategic deals i.e. contract proposals and bid documentations or even crafting presentations.
11:00 - 12:00 pm - Review your to do list and communicate with world once again. Usually an entrepreneur would end the rest of the night on their computer/laptop to complete more work, stay on the computer until midnight or just after and fall asleep then fall asleep beside the laptop or in front of the computer screen. That ends the day in the life of an entrepreneur!
