The reasons why appraisals are carried out in organisation are summarised as follows:
To identify an individual’s current level of job performance
To identify employee strengths and weaknesses
To enable employees to improve their performance
To provide a basis for rewarding employees in relations to their contribution to organisation goals
To motivate individuals
To identify training and development needs
To identify potential performance
To provide information for succession planning
The mostly likely reason for the adoption of staff appraisal is to draw attention to present performance in the job in order to reward people fairly, and to identify those with potential for promotion or transfer. The appraisal programs are designed not only to provide more systematic control of the behavior of subordinates, but also to control the behavior of superiors.
