The major steps in the decision making process are as follows:
Define the problem
Collect relevant data
Develop alternative solutions
Assess the consequences of proposed solutions
Select optimum solutions and implement
Measure results
Key considerations in each steps include the following:
a. Defining the problem: this is a matter of asking the right questions, and of isolating the crucial problem from subsidiary issues; it is important to identify underlying problems and not to confuse them with the overt effects of such problems.
b. Collecting data: the important point here is to collect information which is relevant to the problem concerned, and which involves the staff associated with the problem; seeking information and points of view from the staff concerned helps decision to be accepted in a positive spirit.
c. Developing solutions and assessing their consequences: solutions depend not only on their technical ability to solve a problem, but also on their acceptability to the parties involved and other factors; the quantitative techniques may help to develop solutions and assess some of the consequences; assessing consequence is vital because most decisions can produce negative as well as as positive results.
d. Selecting and implementing optimum solutions: the final selection of a solution will be based on a number of factors, ie. optimum implies the best solutions in the circumstances; the implementation of the solutions is the responsibility of management.
e. Measuring results: this step implies some ability to monitor and elevate the end results of a decision, this final step also enables decisions to be modified or even revoked in the light of experience.
